Create Your Own Masterpiece
Ages 6+
Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch painter whose work was considered Post - Impressionist. He is known for his vivid colors and emotional impact. Some of his most famous works are of sunflowers. (See example photo below).
This lesson will explore how to make a vase with flowers using bright colors and texture.
This lesson will teach children how to: Recreate Shapes, Tear Paper, Cut Paper, Glue, Use Patterns, Create Highlights, Make Texture.
What You Will Need for Your Masterpiece
- Colored Background Paper
- Colored Paper for the Vase (We used Yellow)
- Green Paper for Stems
- Colored Tissue Paper for petals
- Colored Paper for Flower Center
- Colored Paper for the Table (We used Black or Dark Red)
- Small Beans/ Glitter/ Rice/ Beads/ Sequins
- Scissors
- Glue
- Pencil
- White Chalk
Creating your Van Gogh Vase of Flowers
- Lay your background paper flat on a table
- Decide how much table you need in your picture, cut it out and set it on the paper (Don't glue yet!)
- Draw out your vase - small children may need help to make the vase large enough.
- Cut out your vase, but don't glue it yet.
- Cut out your stems using green paper.
- Assemble the table, vase and stems down as you would like them
- Glue them down in place
- Cut or tear the petals from multi-colored tissue (try and get Triangle shapes)
- Glue down the the tissue paper, you can leave the tips unglued to make them appear more three-dimensional
- Brush a thin layer of glue onto the circle shapes and sprinkle on the beans, rice, glitter, sequins or beads to create texture.
- Use white chalk to create a highlight on the vase

Elayne - It's so much fun to work teaching children art! I recommend lots of newspaper to cover tables and floors... I have lots of articles up on various projects which can be altered to suit children of all ages. Good luck!

As a parent of a small child in the California public school system, it's a sad fact that I see very few art projects coming home from school. I remember coming home from school with glue under my fingernails and glitter in my hair as a kid. Not so anymore.
I try to supplement my child's education so that he'll be well-rounded. This is a great project to do with him and his friends (I also organize a playgroup for his peers).

It is such a shame how easy it is for schools to cut funding to the arts. What they don't understand is how the creative mind works - how it problem solves and how it can develop in such a way to look at solutions that people who don't think creatively would never consider. Or, how therapeutic and meditative it can be. So many kids that struggle with focusing benefit greatly as well as an alternative to medication. There's so many reasons art-making important; learning to share, following instructions, expressing oneself - or even the feeling of success after creating something beautiful that isn't about right or wrong,, winning or losing...It's actually quite a survival skill to have a creative mind.
Well, if it can't be changed or valued in our school systems - then parents such as yourself are to be applauded for seeking out alternative supplements to give their children a well-rounded education. Thank you for that! More open and creative minds in the world is exactly what we need! I will continue to help as much as I can.
